The most common mistake with wall art is hanging it too high. When a piece floats near the ceiling, the room feels unsettled and the work loses its connection to the furniture beneath it.

Start at eye level

A widely used guide is to place the centre of the artwork at roughly average eye level — around 145 to 150 cm from the floor. It is a starting point, not a rule: adjust for your ceiling height and the people who use the room.

Relate it to the furniture

Above a sofa, console or bed, leave a modest gap between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one composition. The artwork should usually be narrower than the piece of furniture below it.

Try it before you drill

  • Cut paper to the size of the frame.
  • Tape it to the wall and live with it for a day.
  • Move it until the wall feels calm, then mark the hook position.
